Woodland Ponds Workshop

Monday, October 19th, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm, Miller Woods, McMinnville

Ponds can enhance the scenic, recreation, wildlife, and fire protection values on a woodland property. This workshop taught by OSU Extension Specialist Steve Bowers will cover the practical aspects of starting a successful ponds project on your property. $10 per individual/family (includes a copy of the Woodland Ponds field guide).

Bald Hill Silviculture Twilight Tour

Time: 6:00 PM to “dark”

Join Benton County Extension for an entertaining walking tour and lively discussion of some alternative management activities demonstrated on this property close to Corvallis.  In a very short distance we will visit four different plantings with different histories (starting for Christmas trees or timber), spacings, and arrangements.   Now marked for the first commercial thinning entry this fall (at age 24), we will talk about density, live crown ratios and ring counts on our way to discussing what it takes to make an early entry profitable while improving the future stand. Yes learning can be fun.

  • Speakers: Bill “luck is better that planning” Emmingham (retired OSU Extension Silviculture Specialist) and Mark Miller (Trout Mountain Forestry).
  • Provocateurs: Dave Hibbs (retired OSU Forestry professor) and Brad Withrow-Robinson (OSU Forestry and Natural Resources Extension, Benton Co.)

 

Location: Emmingham property on Bald Hill. 3231 Hawk Crest Rd, Philomath. Directions: turn North off of West Hills Rd on to Bullevard Rd (about ¼ west of the Reservoir Rd/West Hills Rd intersection) and drive up hill until you find a forest.
Parking at the site is limited. We encourage you to car pool from the OSU Extension Office, meeting in the parking lot at 5:30 pm.

Cameron Demonstration Forest Tour

Location: We will meet at Peavy Arboretum lodge and go by vans to Cameron Tract, departing promptly at 9:30 am.   Due to fire conditions and parking limitations at the tract, no additional vehicles will be allowed.

Please take this opportunity to visit the Elizabeth Starker Cameron Demonstration Forest (aka Cameron Tract) with Tammy Cushing and Brad Withrow-Robinson.  Tammy is the new Starker Chair of Private and Family Forestry, and is responsible for developing the educational activities for the Cameron Tract, among many other things.

We will walk the property, review its mission, identify the opportunities it provides, and discuss ways to build a robust educational program to serve family forest landowners in the mid-Valley and around the State. This is a great chance to share your thoughts and help shape the future of this great resource!
